Tribute

Lawrence Joseph Bues (Larry), passed away peacefully on March 5th, 2024, surrounded by his adoring family.

Larry was born on January 8, 1940, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to Otto George Bues and Elizabeth Lang Bues. Larry is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Mary Jo, and his sons Gregory Bues of Fort Myers, Florida; Jonathan Bues (and wife Jasmine) of Lawrenceville, New Jersey; and Alexander Bues (and wife Catherine) of New Canaan, Connecticut. Larry will also be dearly missed by his three granddaughters, Carter, Emory, and Reid, and grandson, Oliver, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Larry was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Elizabeth Bues Wittemann, and his brother-in-law Ross Wittemann.

Larry was educated by the Jesuits at Fairfield College Preparatory School; he studied Economics at Tufts University and Bank Management at The New England School of Banking at Williams College and The Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University. A graduate of the Administrative Training Program of the former Citytrust Bank in Bridgeport, CT, he dedicated 30 years to a successful career at Citytrust as Executive Vice President, having served as a Regional Executive and Head of Commercial Lending during his tenure. He was known at Citytrust for his relentless focus on high-quality work for the bank and his ability to step back and have a lot of fun and laughs with coworkers. He later joined Fairfield County Bank as Vice President and Senior Commercial Lender. Larry retired in 2015.

Larry lived a faith-filled life, attending Mass every Sunday at Saint Theresa Church in Trumbull, CT, and serving as an Adorer in Our Lady of Fatima Chapel for Perpetual Adoration every Tuesday afternoon. He sought a healthy lifestyle, enjoying daily runs and playing singles or doubles on his clay tennis court with family and friends. Larry looked forward to receiving his season subscription to the US Open and enjoyed watching many matches at Flushing Meadows with bank customers, family, and friends every September.

Devoted to service, Larry cultivated countless friendships through the many community and professional organizations he joined during his career. He served as Director and Chairman of the Finance Committee of the former Park City Hospital, Chairman and Treasurer of the Bridgeport Economic Development Corporation, Director of the Bridgeport Regional Business Council, and as a trustee on the Board of Directors of Bridgeport Hospital. A member of the Kiwanis Club in Wilton, Larry was also active with the United Way in Norwalk and Wilton and the Wilton Chamber of Commerce. He was a former member of the Patterson Club in Fairfield, the Algonquin Club in Bridgeport, and the Black Rock Yacht Club.

In retirement, Larry was an avid reader who also enjoyed listening to classical music, having held tickets at The Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Most recently, Larry was a member of the Senior Center on Priscilla Place in Trumbull, where his hearty laugh was shared around the pinochle table twice a week. He will be remembered for his kind and loving nature, his silliness and one-liners during family gatherings, and his devotion to his family.
