He was pre-deceased by his infant son Paul Greenwood, his grandson Francis Apgar, brothers John, Stanley, Thomas & Robert and sister Ruth Felix. Also, brothers in law Monsignor George Birge, Robert Birge, and sister in law Ellen Stadtmueller. Dick leaves 52 loving nephews & nieces. He was a graduate of St. Augustine’s School in Bridgeport, Fairfield College Preparatory School and Niagara University. Prior to attending Niagara University, Dick served in the US Army 7th Infantry, in the Marshall Islands, Okinawa, Philippines, Japan & Korea during World War II. A founding student of Fairfield Prep, he enrolled when the school opened in 1942 and was a proud & active member of the Latin Scholars, the alumni group founded by the original graduates of Fairfield Prep. He fulfilled the school’s mission, truly becoming a man for others. Dick worked his entire career with family, beginning with his father & brothers as a builder and then joining his wife’s family company, The R. B. Birge Co., with his father in law and alongside his brothers in law for over 30 years. He retired a successful sales engineer and his quiet & effective leadership continued to guide the Company’s growth throughout his retirement as an active member of the Board of Directors until his passing. He leaves sons, grandsons, nephews & grand-nephews continuing the successful family tradition at the Company. He was a dedicated parishioner of St. Theresa’s in Trumbull for over 50 years, serving on the Parish Finance Committee many years. His love of sports led him to coach baseball for many years with Trumbull Little League where he was fortunate to have coached all six of his sons. He was also a board member and leader in building the successful program which led Trumbull to the 1989 Little League World Series Championship. He was an avid follower of NCAA March Madness & NFL football and in recent years enjoyed, along with his sons, the Norden Club Fantasy Football League. Mr. Greenwood, as he was fondly known around the club, was the oldest participating member & a defending champion. He was a longtime member of the Gaelic American Club in Fairfield, the American Legion Post 141, the Bridgeport Old Timers Association, and was especially fond of his Poker Club with his lifelong friends and the many shared gatherings among their families. Dick was a kind, caring, generous person who was known for his positive outlook and great sense of humor. He was always quick with a joke or an encouraging word and lived his life with honor and devotion. He enjoyed the many vacations with family & friends, especially the annual ski trips in the White Mountains & summers at Lake Sunapee. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. The family is grateful for the loving care Dr. Kirkland and Drs. Meizlish & Moscowitz and their staffs extended over the years, and Vitas Healthcare (especially Danielle) during his last year.
