Obituary

Abbott A. Newman, M.D., age 90, of Trumbull, beloved husband of 51 years to the late Marie Grojean Newman, R.N., M.S., died Friday, July 11, 2008, at Bridgeport Hospital. Born in New York City, he was a longtime Easton resident before moving to Trumbull. Dr. Newman enjoyed a long career in the medical profession, licensed to practice in New York and Connecticut; also a Diplomate, American Board of Internal Medicine. He received his B.A. from Yale University, class of 1938 (of which he is president of the alumni association) and his M.D. in 1942 from Long Island College of Medicine, Brooklyn, NY. He served his internships as assistant resident in medicine at Grace Hospital, New Haven, pathology at New Haven Hospital, and assistant resident in pathology at Yale New Haven Hospital. He was a clinical fellow in medicine (cardiology and hematology) at The New York Hospital – Cornell Medical Center, NYC from 1945 – 1948. Dr. Newman was a clinical instructor in medicine and assistant clinical professor in medicine at Yale New Haven Hospital. He practiced internal medicine at his Bridgeport office, and concurrently held associate attending privileges with the department of internal medicine at Bridgeport Hospital, member of the courtesy staff at St. Vincent's Hospital, physician to outpatients, (compensation and pension division) at West Haven Veterans Administration Hospital, and continued to do exams for over 100 insurance companies well into his 80's. Dr. Newman was a broad member and chairman of the professional advisory committees for the Visiting Nurses Association of Bridgeport, Inc., and Partners in Care. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II, as Captain of the Medical Corp. Dr. Newman is survived by his daughters, Deborah Newman Roe of Aurora, IL, Patricia Gifford of Cheshire, and Cheryl Howard and husband Thomas of New Milford, five grandchildren, Kristina Marie Gifford, Adam Harry Roe, Daniel Allen Gifford, Sean Michael Roe, and Paul Cortlan Frey Gifford. He was predeceased by a son Harold Allen Newman. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 1 – 2:30 pm, in the Redgate – Hennessy Funeral Home, Main Street and Gorham Place, Trumbull, with a service time to be announced.
