Alice Winifred (Harmon) Welch, age 97, of Trumbull, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2015. She was the beloved wife of the late John William Welch (former Business Manager of Sacred Heart University). In addition to being a wife, Alice was also a mother to four, grandmother to ten, and great grandmother to eleven. She was born in Weedsport, New York on March 24, 1918, the daughter of the late R. Michael and Alice (O'Connor) Harmon. Alice attended Cortland Teachers College and received her undergraduate degree from NYU and her Masters from Marquette University. She also took courses at the University of Bridgeport and Fairfield University. She began her teaching career in Freeport, Long Island as a first grade teacher. She put her teaching career aside to raise her family and rejoined the teaching profession in the early 1960s teaching in Shorewood, WI and Fairfield, CT. During her time in the Fairfield Public Schools she was an adjunct professor at Bridgeport University and Fairfield University. Alice was a member of the NEA, CEA, FEA, REF, DKG, International Reading Association, as well as the New England Reading Association where she was a past president of that organization. She finished her teaching career as the Department Chairman for Reading (K-12) in the Fairfield Public Schools, retiring in 1980. She spent the next 6 years enjoying her time with her husband until he died in 1986. Alice took great pleasure in the time she spent with her children and their ever-growing families. Alice leaves behind her four children: William Welch and his wife, Catherine of Connecticut, Robert Welch and his wife, Mayela Fonseca of Iowa, David Welch and his wife, Mary Ann of Connecticut, Patricia (Welch) Bohnsack and her husband, M. Gregory Bohnsack of Florida. She is also survived by one brother, Thomas Harmon of New York. She leaves behind 10 grandchildren, Matthew, Elizabeth, John, Michael, Tania, Marianela, Mario, Megan, Alison and Eileen and 11 great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. Alice was predeceased by her three sisters, two brothers and three sisters-in-law. Alice led a long, full and happy life filled with the family that she was deeply proud of and enjoyed tremendously. Friends may greet her family on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m., in the Redgate-Hennessy Funeral Home, 4 Gorham Place and Main Street, Trumbull.
