Obituary

Barbara H. Barnwell peacefully departed this life surrounded by loved ones on July 17, 2026, at the age of 86. Born on January 8, 1940, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to Jane and Joseph Hailey, Barbara lived a life defined by faith, family, education, and an unwavering commitment to public service.

Barbara was educated in the Bridgeport Public School System and believed deeply in the value of lifelong learning. She continued her education at Housatonic Community College before attending the University of Bridgeport, where she earned both her bachelor's degree and her master's degree. Her educational accomplishments reflected her determination, perseverance, and commitment to personal and professional excellence.

Barbara devoted 49 years of distinguished service to the State of Connecticut, serving in numerous positions throughout her remarkable career. Her professionalism, integrity, and dedication earned the respect and admiration of colleagues across state government. She concluded her career as Executive Assistant to the President of Western Connecticut State University, where she was known for her exceptional organizational skills, wisdom, gracious spirit, and unwavering commitment to excellence. Her years of service stand as a lasting testament to her dedication to the citizens of Connecticut.

Although Barbara was deeply committed to her career, her greatest joy was her family. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a proud grandmother whose kindness, wisdom, and unconditional love touched generations. She possessed a quiet strength, a generous heart, and a feisty spirit that made everyone around her feel welcomed and valued.

Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Clarence Barnwell. She was also preceded in death by her 11 siblings: Kathryne Robinson, Bessie Lee Hailey, Margaret Thomas, Cashmon Hailey, Joyce Cummings, Joseph Hailey, Charles Hailey, Jennie Fernandes, Carrie Buster, Edward Hailey, and Vincent Hailey.

She leaves to cherish her precious memory her loving daughters, Pamela (Eric) Sanders of Trumbull, CT and Athena Jenkins of Hamden, CT; her four beloved grandsons, Eric Jr., Julian, Adrian, and Christian Sanders. A special sister-in-law Joan Steglich, Accokeek, MD. A special nephew Eugene Robinson Bridgeport, CT. Two special nieces Sheila (John) Watts, Trumbull, CT and Jacinta Thomas, Midlothian, VA and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, dear friends, neighbors, and former colleagues whose lives were enriched by her love, friendship, and guidance.

Barbara will be remembered for her grace, humility, unwavering faith, and lifelong dedication to serving others. Whether through her many years of public service, her devotion to her family, or the countless acts of kindness she extended to others, she left an enduring mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy of love, service, and excellence will continue to inspire those she leaves behind.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday at 10:00am, in the Walter's Memorial AME Zion Church, 445 Broad Street, Bridgeport. Funeral services will begin at 11:00am. Interment will follow in Mountain Grove of Easton Cemetery. To send condolences visit www.redgatehennessy.com
