Barry T. McCarthy, 66, of Hawthorne, NJ, died on Monday, Sept. 28, 2009, at the VA Medical Center in East Orange, NJ. Born in Bridgeport, CT, to the late Charles and Mary Riley McCarthy, Mr. McCarthy was a 1961 graduate of Bassick High School, where he a member of the swim and track teams, drama and key clubs. He served in the U.S. Army at Fort Dix, NJ from 1961 to 1964. A consummate salesman who traveled widely, he specialized in the distribution of wine and spirits and was known for his palate. Widely sought after as a master wine taster, for many years he judged whiskey and wine for the Beverage Tasting Institute in Chicago, and also owned a popular nightclub in Atlanta, GA. He was generous, fun-loving, and an accomplished cook.Mr. McCarthy was predeceased by his brother, Brian, and sister, Mary Jane Baumwald. He leaves a niece, Heather Baumwald, brother-in-law, Michael Baumwald; his second family, cousins Mark and Marla Hauslaib, Brett and Florence Hauslaib, Jonathan and Kathy Hauslaib, Kristin Hauslaib and Anthony Pratt, Maryellen Hauslaib and Erika Rohrbach, Seth Hauslaib and Arthur Bernabucci, and a host of other relatives and dear friends who cherish his memory. The family will receive friends at the Redgate-Hennessy Funeral Home, Main Street and Gorham Place, Trumbull, on Saturday, from 1 to 3 p.m., followed by a memorial service. Private interment will be held in St. Michael's Cemetery, Stratford.
