Betty Jane Carlson, age 78 of Trumbull, beloved wife of Carl Carlson passed away Friday, November 25, 2011 at Maefair Health Care. Betty was born in Staten Island on May 18, 1933 to the late Alexander and Ida May Stevenson. She graduated from Port Richmond High School, and St. Luke's Nursing School in Manhattan. She worked at St. Luke's Hospital, the Nantucket Cottage Hospital and then at U.S. Public Health Hospital in Staten Island. There she became head nurse of the cardiac care unit. At the time, she was the youngest head nurse in the nation who had not previously served in the military. Betty married Carl in May of 1960, and left nursing to raise her family. She moved to Trumbull in 1965, where she resided with her husband Carl for 46 years. After raising her children she returned to work at Baubles, Bangles and Beads jewelry store for several years. Betty was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church where she served on the Women's Society, altar guild, as a Sunday school teacher, youth group leader and other church organizations. She was a member of the Trumbull Junior Women's Club, the PTA at Tashua School, a library volunteer, and Welcome Wagon. Her greatest joy in life was to care for her children and later her grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister Barbara, a brother Robert, and a son Bruce. Betty is survived by her husband Carl, a daughter Susan Selk and husband John of Monroe, a son Paul Carlson of Bridgeport, and daughter Allison Mazabras and husband Dan of New Canaan, six grandchildren; Sarah and Alex Selk, Molly, Carl, Matthew and Brady Mazabras, and a brother Alvin Stevenson of Florida. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. in the Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 5995 Main Street, Trumbull, with Rev. Emil Witschy, Pastor officiating. Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Friends may call Monday from 3 to 7p.m. in the Redgate – Hennessy Funeral Home, Main Street and Gorham Place, Trumbull.
