Obituary

Catherine MacKinnon Gorton, age 106, of Trumbull, died peacefully in her home on Thursday, January 17, 2008. Born in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia on November 22, 1901, she was the second of fourteen children to Archibald and Annabelle Gillis MacKinnon. Residing in New Rochelle and Liberty New York, she became an American citizen in 1938. She was married for 64 years to the late Edwin Leslie Gorton and moved to Connecticut in 1944. She has been a resident of Trumbull since 1961. Catherine was a dedicated homemaker all her life, however did work for Chance Vaught during World War II. She was also a prizewinning salesperson for Fairway Beef, Fairfield for ten years while in her sixties and also worked as a tour guide for the Shakespeare Festival Theater, Stratford. A Catholic charismatic and member of St. Theresa Church, Trumbull, Catherine visited sacred sites in Europe, including Lourdes, the Vatican and Fatima while in her seventies. She often held prayer meetings in her home and had many dear friends. She enjoyed baking and cooking and often held social events and parties for relatives and friends at her home. She was an excellent baby-sitter and was dearly loved by her 26 grandchildren and 58 great grandchildren. She had a special recipe for date cookies that would be made once or twice a year around the holidays which was very popular, there were few leftovers. She prayed the rosary everyday and when priests came to visit or give the sacraments they would often stay to listen to her wit and wisdom. Catherine had a sharp mind and could quote Scottish Gaelic poems even into her last year. She loved seeing babies and praying for them, her relatives and her grandchildren. She was a good mother, always sewing, cleaning, cooking, encouraging education and holiness in her children, and children's children: an inspiration to her family and all who knew her. She had gentle nature and sense of humor. One of her favorite quotes was "All the world is crazy except me and thee, and I sometimes wonder about thee!" She has left a great heritage of good memories. We shall miss her.
