Chester E. Borck, a pioneer of frozen bread dough and a promoter and innovator of in-store bakeries, died on October 18, 2008 in South Carolina after a brief hospitalization. He was 95 years old. Mr. Borck lived in Bridgeport and Fairfield, Connecticut for over 60 years, where he was a member of Brooklawn Country Club, followed by 30 years in North Palm Beach, Florida. He was born in Bridgeport, where his father owned a successful wholesale bakery and where he worked as a boy on holidays and during the summer months. He graduated from Central High School in 1931 and Syracuse University in 1935. He was one of the early recipients of a master's degree in business from Babson College in 1936. He continued his studies in the baking industry at Dunwoody Institute and the American Institute of Baking. Mr. Borck began his career in the family business then known as Borck and Stevens Bakery which at that time was one of the largest wholesale bakeries in New England, and he later became its president. He invented the first automated English muffin slicer and grill as well as equipment for automating Danish pastry production. In the late 1950's, Mr. Borck founded Country Home Bakers, a company based upon a new bakery concept using fast-freeze technology that he helped develop. Today he is considered by many to have been the father of the modern-day in-store baking industry which gave the consumer high quality, fresh bakery products baked-off in the store or super market on a daily basis. Under his direction Country Home Bakers grew into one of the leading bakery and snack producers in the United States with operations in many states and Europe. Among its subsidiary businesses were Readi-Bake, Inc. in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Readi-Bake, Ltd. in Milton Keynes, England, Jessie Lord, Inc. in Torrance, California and Sanders in Detroit, Michigan. In 1998, Mr. Borck was the recipient of the Ernst and Young award as Master Entrepreneur of the Year. He also received an honorary Doctorate degree from Babson University. He continued to remain active in the business until the 1990's. Mr. Borck was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Jessie Lord Borck, his son Chester E.
