Obituary

Concetta J. Giarelli, age 84, of Trumbull, died on Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at St. Vincent's Medical Center after a valiant battle with kidney disease. Born in Carbondale, Penn. on Oct. 13, 1924, she was the daughter of John and Carmela Caporelli and a 1942 graduate of Niagara Falls High School. She moved to Bridgeport first during World War II with her family, returning after the war to Carbondale, Penn. before moving again to Bridgeport with her husband of 49 years, the late Andrew F. Giarelli. She became very active in politics, serving as president of the Bridgeport Federation of Democratic Women and as a voting delegate for Connecticut's 4th Congressional District. She hosted receptions for many prominent state political figures, including the late Sen. Thomas Dodd, Congressman Don Irwin, and former Bridgeport mayors Samuel Tedesco and Hugh Curran. She worked for 28 years as a member of the Housatonic Girl Scout Council executive staff as accountant and business manager. She was past president of the William Samuel Johnson School P.T.A. and of the St. Raphael's Home School Association, a former District Chairwoman for the March of Dimes, and past treasurer and education chairwoman for the Trumbull Women's Club. She found time also to take courses at Sacred Heart University and adult continuing education courses in Writing, Spanish, Italian, business management and public relations. She is survived by her son Andrew and his wife Kimberley of Portland, Ore., her daughter Louise Ann Barberino and her husband Thomas of Wallingford, Conn., her son John of Los Angeles, Calif., her granddaughters Brittany and Blair Barberino, her sister Anita Wilding of Brookfield, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Philip Caporelli and her sister Susan McLune, who died a week earlier in St. Vincent's Medical Center. Funeral services will take place Saturday, May 23 at 9:15am, from the Redgate – Hennessy Funeral Home, Main Street and Gorham Place, Trumbull and at 10:00am, in St. Andrew Church, Bridgeport, with a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Trumbull. Friends may call Friday from 4pm to 7pm.
