Daniel E. "Butch" Brennan Jr., age 64, of Bridgeport, died Saturday, September 8, 2007, at St. Vincent's Medical Center. Born in Houston, TX, he was the son of Emily Tabor Brennan and the late Daniel E. Brennan Sr. Mr. Brennan was raised in the Bridgeport area and resided in New York City for 20 years before returning to live in Trumbull. While residing in New York City, he was a member of Mayor John Lindsey's Street Task Force in the late 1960's.A New York State licensed mortician, he received his degree in mortuary science from the American Academy McAllister Institute, NYC, and in 1971entered the external degree program at Excelsior College, the first program of its kind in the country, where he received his bachelors of science degree. Mr. Brennan had worked as executive assistant to the President of Hunter College and also went on to hold a similar position for the Chancellor of City University of New York. In 1981 he received his law degree from the University of Bridgeport in only 2 ½ years, and he was one of the first Excelsior alumni to go on to receive a law degree. Mr. Brennan was admitted to practice law before the Connecticut State Bar in 1981, and the United States Supreme Court in 1988 and clerked for the administrative court of Judge Burt Jacobson. He became a partner in the law firm of Brennan, McNamara, and Baldwin, a firm founded by his grandfather. In 1999 he received Excelsior Alumni of the Year Award, the same year he was appointed to a judgeship for the Connecticut First Superior Court. Mr. Brennan was one of the founders of The Institute for Trial Advocacy, and a member and chair for the Supreme Court Historical Society, State of Connecticut. He acted as a legal advisor for the Bridgeport Police Department, and worked with labor relations for the City of Bridgeport and the Town of Trumbull. Throughout his career, Mr. Brennan lectured, hosted radio series, and published articles. A member of Congregation B'nai Israel, he served on the Broad of Trustees for three years. He was also a U.S. Naval Veteran and a friend of Bill W. In addition to his mother of Milford, he is survived by his wife Ruth Gonchar Brennan of Madison, a son Benjamin T. Brennan of Fairfield, a daughter Danna J. VanBrandt and husband Joachim of Freetown, Sierra Leon, West Africa, a sister Dorothea E. Brennan of Fairfield, and numerous first, second, and third cousins. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11:00 a.m. in the Redgate – Hennessy Funeral Home, Main Street and Gorham Place, Trumbull. Interment will follow in B'nai Israel Cemetery, Monroe.
