David Bruce Wheeler age 67 of Easton, Maryland, formerly of Southport died peacefully on Sunday, September 23, 2007 at his home. David was born in Bridgeport on November 27, 1939, son of John Walker Wheeler Jr. and Eleanor Hubbard Wheeler of Fairfield and subsequently Springfield, VT. After graduating from Vermont Academy, where David was captain of the ski team, he graduated, Magna Cum Laude, from Nichols College in 1964. Following Nichols, David completed graduate studies in business at Yale University in 1967. David, or "Davey" as he was known by many friends and families, was an avid golfer and had been a member of Talbot Country Club, Easton, MD. He had served on many civic boards and community teams including Community House Board Member in St. Michael's, Maryland, President of the University Club in Bridgeport, Republican Town Committee member in Fairfield, Trustee/Administrator of the Junior Golf Program at Brooklawn Country Club in Fairfield, and a past member of the Fairfield Beach Club, Pequot Yacht Club and Brooklawn Country Club. David had a real passion for the outdoors and sailing/racing over the ocean waters of Long Island Sound and off the coast of Rhode Island and Block Island. David was the owner/Captain of several Blue Water race boats from 1980 through 1994, capturing numerous championships. All yachts were named "Nevis" for the island home that he had shared with his wife Sheila and family from the early 1960's through 2000. Mr. Wheeler had spent four decades as an investment broker, building a wealth of friends and clients. He started his brokerage career with Carreau Smith Inc. of Bridgeport and most recently David was a Vice President/Investment Officer at Ferris Baker Watts in Easton, MD. Mr. Wheeler is survived by his wife of 38 years, Sheila M. Wheeler of Easton, MD; son Bruce Wheeler, Jr. of Bedford, NH; son Keith W. Wheeler of Coventry, RI; daughter Meredith Molony of New Orleans, LA; and six grandchildren, Ellen and Greg Wheeler of Bedford, NH, Eryn and Ross Wheeler of Coventry, RI, Alastair Harris and Christopher Molony of New Orleans, LA, siblings, John Hubbard Wheeler of West Palm Beach, FL and R. Duff Wheeler of Ft. Meyers, FL. He was predeceased by his son, Colin Wheeler, brother Kenneth Wheeler and sister Joan W. Lapoint. A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 12, 2007 at 2:00pm at Southport Congregational Church, 524 Pequot Ave, Southport. Internment will be private at the convenience of his family.
