Obituary

Dolores (Dot) Zimmer, 95, of Fairfield & Stratford, CT, died peacefully on June 20, 2025 at Marbridge Assisted Living and Retirement Center in Cheshire.  Dot was born on May 30, 1930 in Kiel, Wisconsin, the only child of Herbert & Gertrude Zimmer. Dot grew up mostly in Wisconsin, but her family briefly lived in Ubly, Michigan. She graduated from Ubly High School and then pursued a Nursing degree, graduating from the Holy Family School of Nursing in Manitowoc, Wisconsin in 1951. She had a career in nursing for more than forty years.

Dot married Edward J. Zimmer in 1954. Due to Ed's corporate sales position, they lived in many places in addition to Wisconsin, including Seattle, Washington; Mount Prospect, Illinois and finally Fairfield, Connecticut. Dot worked at Golden Heights Health Center and Cambridge Manor as a nursing supervisor until she retired in 2000. From 1996-2014, Dot lived in Stratford, CT where she was a parishioner at Our Lady of Grace, an active member of the Baldwin (Senior) Center as well as a member and officer of the local AARP chapter #5284.

In 2014, Dot returned to Fairfield. She enjoyed various activities at the Bigelow Senior Center. Dot was also an avid reader and an enthusiastic fan of the UConn Women's basketball team and a devoted parishioner at Our Lady of the Assumption church.

Dot, though petite, had a large personality. She was known among family and friends alike for her intellect and quick wit. She loved to joke and laugh. She was hard-working, independent and a natural leader. Dot enjoyed gardening and watching Jeopardy. She loved playing games like Mahjong and Bingo, but she especially loved playing Scrabble, at which she excelled. She liked to bake, especially banana or orange-cranberry bread, which she would bring to the senior center to share. She enjoyed a good cup of coffee (flavored with raspberry) and a nice glass of wine even more. Dot was fiercely proud of her family, particularly her grandchildren, whose activities and accomplishments she gladly shared with anyone who would listen.

Dot was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Edward J. Zimmer. She is survived by her six children: Scott (Donna) Zimmer of Fernandina Beach, FL; Lisa (Charles) Eaton of Storrs, CT; Jeanne Zimmer (Jeff Carlson) of Redondo Beach, CA; Amy (Robert) Mongillo of Cheshire, CT; Martin (Adrienne) Zimmer of Monroe, CT; and Trudi (Alex) Durrell of Fairfield, CT.

Dot is also survived by fourteen grandchildren: Nathaniel Eaton (Ioan Stef); Andrew Eaton (fiancee Catherine Andersen); Brian (Yesurekha) Zimmer; Adam (Rachel) Zimmer; Julie Eaton (Christophe) Graupner; Charles Eaton III (fiancee Colleen Joyce); Daniel Mongillo; Laura Mongillo (fiance John Simmon); Jacob Zimmer; Luke Carlson; Emily Zimmer; Ryan Durrell; Kathryn Zimmer; and Anastasia Durrell. Additionally, she leaves behind her great-grandson, Remi Graupner, and several nieces and nephews.
