Donald Robert Connor, 87, of Syracuse, NY, and more recently of Fairfield, CT, died on December 19, 2012. Don was born in Syracuse, NY, on August 15, 1925. He was a graduate of Vocational High School in Syracuse. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943 and served as a right gunner on a B-29 Superfortress bomber throughout the remainder of WWII. He was stationed with the 99th Bomb Squadron, 9th Bomb Group on Tinian Island, and flew 37 combat missions followed by many humanitarian and rescue missions. He flew his last combat mission on his 20th birthday and learned, on the return leg of that flight that the war had officially ended. For his service, Don was awarded The Air Medal, The Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, The Distinguished Flying Cross and The Conspicuous Service Cross. Don's Army service was always a great source of pride and he enjoyed reunions with his crew "brothers" as often as possible during his retirement. He also served his country during the Korean War as a dietician in the 343rd Hospital Group. Don married Carolyn Ruth Ogden, in 1947, and they shared 54 wonderful years of marriage until the day she died. With Carolyn, he was an active member of many organizations, including the Onondaga Hill Players, American Legion Post 41 in Syracuse (lifetime member and past Post-Commander), a dance club and multiple bowling leagues. Their greatest joy together was participation in SCCA (Sports Car Club of America), travelling throughout the Northeast and Canada to participate in different races and events. Don served as Regional Executive for the CNY chapter. In addition, Don was an active member of St. Ann's parish, serving many years as an Usher and Bingo worker. In his working life, he was a self-made man, working his way from employment with Paul T. Henson's auto dealership and Thruway Auto-glass in Syracuse, to owning his own service shops in Fulton, NY and Fairmount Auto Glass in Camillus, NY, and culminating in ownership of the Bon-Ton Auto Glass in Syracuse, NY, for 12 years prior to his retirement. Upon his retirement, he enjoyed travel to Florida, golfing with friends, volunteering with the American Legion to serve veterans' needs in CNY, and spending time with his family. In addition to his cherished wife, Don was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur B. and Helen Trainor Connor; his brothers, Arthur M. and Arnold W. Connor; and his sisters, Anna L. Caldwell and Holly M. Connor. He is survived by his daughters: Ruthanne Connor-King and Charlie King of Orlando, Fl; Melanie K. Connor of Syracuse, NY; and Colleen H. Connor and Brian Kelahan of Fairfield, CT ; his grandchildren, Jennifer Schultz (Tom), Andy King, Sarah Brandt (Colby), Jessica Wilkie (Pauline Smith), Jillian Kellar (Doug), Jamie Beth Wilkie, Justina Wilkie, Seamus Kelahan, Ciaran Kelahan and Clancy Kelahan; and great-grandchildren, Sophie Schultz, Kate Schultz, Abigail King, Madeline King, Libby King, Zoey Brandt, Paige Kellar, Faidra Kellar, Isabella Gerasimovich, and Ryan Bishop . Also surviving are a brother-in-law D. Weston Ogden (Ruth) and his nieces and nephews, Arthur C. Connor (Leanne), Eugene Connor, A. William Connor (Mary), Sister Kathleen Connor CSJ, Mary T. Sledziona (John), Timothy F. Connor (Terri), Annette H. Campbell (John), Natalie A. Trump (Rick), Gerald A. Ogden (Gayle) and their families. Services: Funeral mass at 1:30 pm Thursday, December 27, at St. Ann's Church, 4471 Onondaga Blvd, Syracuse. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, DeWitt. There will be no calling hours but friends may visit after the interment ceremony at Don's granddaughters, Jennifer Schultz, 710 Rugby Road, Syracuse.
