Douglas J. Comboni, age 76, of Fairfield, devoted husband of Harriet Haller Lajoie Comboni, died Sunday, February 3, 2008, at Maefair Health Care Center, Trumbull. Born in Bridgeport on April 28, 1931, he was the son of the late Michael and Rose Seimon Comboni. He was retired from Handy & Harmon, where he was a group leader in the wire department for 44 years. Mr. Comboni was a graduate of Bassick High School, class of 1949 and was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a founding member of the Trumbull Land Trust, past member of the Connecticut Audubon Bird Craft Museum, Fairfield where he served on the Board of Governors, a 50 year member and former treasurer of the Connecticut Entomoligical Society, New Haven and the UConn State Museum of Natural History. Doug was instrumental in saving the Trumbull Pequonnock Valley for open space and had collected flora and fauna, documented with photos. Those photos have been presented to the Nichols Historical Society. He co-authored two papers on rare tiger beetles he had collected, per his request his large insect collection consisting of 5000 species will be used for teaching purposes in the collections at Yale Peabody Museum, New Haven and Harvard College, Mass. Doug had been collecting insects since the age of 17, what started as a biology assignment with the encouragement of his biology teacher Charley Carr, never stopped, therefore, a great hobby began. His works and papers reached scientists and universities, far and wide, in Germany, France, Beijing, China and Brisbane Queensland, Austrialia. His family was very proud of him. Doug loved to amuse his family with silly songs on his guitar. In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by his children, Kate Panda and her fiancée Dwayne Baker of Stratford, Michele Anastasia and her husband David of Westport, Bruce D. Comboni and his partner Dawn Mastrinardi of Shelton, and Douglas J. Comboni Jr., of Bridgeport, grandchildren who loved him dearly, Dawn and Robert Panda of Stratford, Denise Reyes and her husband Miguel of Bridgeport, Zach Comboni of Trumbull, Isabella Comboni of Boca Raton, Florida, Jason Barker and Dakotah Lajoie, of Newtown, Brett and Heidi Barker, of Watertown, Steven, Nicole and Noelle Anastasia, all of Westport, great gradchildren, Michelle Lynn Panda of Stratford, Michayla and Diana Reyes, of Bridgeport, Dylan and Cole Barker of Watertown, several nieces and nephews. Other family members include, Don Barker and his wife Debra of Watertown, Fred Lajoie of Newtown, Norman Lajoie of Waterbury, Richard Haller and wife Helen of Magnolia, Delaware, Walter Haller and wife Irene of Hamden, Norman Haller and wife Joy of Easton, Audrey of Stepney, Lavinia Haller Beardsley and Margaret Haller Schwartz of Shelton. Doug was a lifelong member of the Grace Episcopal Church and at his request there will be no calling hours and burial will be private.
