Edward (Ed) Zimmer 80 of Stratford and formerly of Fairfield beloved husband of Dot Zimmer died Sunday March 23, 2008 at St. Vincent's Medical Center. He was born in Neenah, WI to Jacob and Edith Zimmer on October 8, 1927. Before attending Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI he served as a corporal in the US Army. Ed married Dot Zimmer (nee) in May 1954. He began his sales career at Marathon Paper Company in Neenah, WI followed by American Can Company in Seattle WA and Mount Prospect, IL prior to being transferred to New York City. Ed and Dot settled in Fairfield in 1966 and resided there for over thirty years with their family. Ed realized his dream of having his own business, Family Home Center, in Milford which he began in 1970. He remained in business there for over thirty years. He was an active lifetime member of the Elks Club, serving two terms as Exalted Ruler of the Fairfield Lodge #2220, as well as District Deputy and State Secretary. Moreover, he was an active member of the AARP chapter #5284 in Stratford, serving as Vice President and a member of the Stratford Seniors Men's Club. Additionally, Ed volunteered his time to groups such as the Baldwin Center , Our Lady of Grace Church Bingo and Merton House in Bridgeport. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan, bocce player, bowler and Scrabble master. He was predeceased by a brother Fran Zimmer of Appleton, WI and is survived by his wife, six brothers and sisters, fouteen grandchildren, and six children including: Scott and Donna Zimmer of Monroe, Lisa and Charles Eaton of Storrs, Jeanne Zimmer and Jeff Carlson of Redondo Beach, CA, Amy and Robert Mongillo of Cheshire, Martin and Adrienne Zimmer of Monroe, and Trudi and Alex Durrell of Fairfield. A Memorial Mass will be held Friday at 11:00am in Our Lady of Grace Church, 497 Second Hill Lane, Stratford. Friends may greet his family Friday from 10:00am until 11:00am in the Our Lady of Grace Church Hall.
