Obituary

Helen Gordon McHugh of Fairfield, a longtime local educator died in her home on Sunday June 7, 2009. Born in Bridgeport on September 6, 1918 she was the daughter of Paul and Minna Gottlieb Gordon. She graduated from Wellesley College in 1939 and later received a Master's and Sixth Year Degree from the University of Bridgeport. She married Robert "Bam" McHugh on April 16, 1943. They eloped and were married in Miami, Florida as Bam was preparing to ship out to the Pacific in World War II. During WWII she worked at Remington Arms in Bridgeport. After the war Mrs. McHugh worked as a teacher and assistant principal at Bassick High School, the Director of Guidance and Personnel for the Bridgeport Schools and as an Assistant Superintendent of Schools in Bridgeport. After her retirement she was an avid golfer, member of the Patterson Club in Fairfield, volunteered with the Visiting Nurses Association of Bridgeport and the Barnum Festival. She was predeceased by her husband Bam McHugh and is survived her two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Barbara McHugh of Sandy Hook, Jeffrey and Patricia McHugh of Fairfield, her brother and sister-in-law Dr. Robert and Arden Gordon of Woodbridge, three grandchildren and their spouses Bridget and Brian Grabel, Ian and Laura McHugh, and Molly and Justin Henry, three great granddaughters, Aleysha, Maya and Laila Henry all of Fairfield, and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends may call Tuesday 4-8pm in the Redgate - Hennessy Funeral Home, Main Street and Gorham Place, Trumbull. Interment will be private at the convenience of her family.
