Obituary

Homer C. Batman, retired General Electric Company executive and 50 year resident of Greenfield Hill, Fairfield, died Friday, April 4, 2008 at age 95. During his 40 year career with General Electric, he held numerous financial management and executive posts, including Chairman of the Board, President and Chief Executive Officer of General Electric-ESKE, Ltd. of Zurich, Switzerland, General Electric's European housewares operation with manufacturing plants in Switzerland, France and Germany. Mr. Batman was born November 8, 1912 in Ames Iowa. He was a star basketball player at Ames High School, where his friends nicknamed him "Shorty" He was short of stature, but his life's accomplishments proved him to be a giant among men. An honor student at Iowa State University, he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta, Scabbard and Blade military honor society and Tau Beta Phi engineering honor society. He graduated from Iowa State during the Great Depression. Mr. Batman joined the General Electric Company in 1935 in Bridgeport. The next year he married Margaret Evvard, his childhood sweetheart. The Batmans' lifetime relationship began when they met in kindergarten and continued to her death in 2000. He was known to say that the two most exciting times of his life were his first date with Margaret and his hole in one. The Batmans raised two daughters. The family were members of the Greenfield Hill Congregational Church, where he served as Treasurer and Chairman of the Broad of Trustees. Mr. Batman and his late wife established endowments for both the Memorial Garden and the Youth in Appalachia programs of this church. He was a member of the Brooklawn Country Club where he served as Treasurer, House Chairman and President. In these leadership roles he was known to be generous with his time and counsel and parsimonicas with the funds. Mr. Batman's career with General Electric took the family from Bridgeport to Schenectady, NY, Cleveland, OH, Fairfield, and Zurich, Switzerland. In 1973 he retired to an active life of golf, travel, and gardening. He enjoyed membership in the Connecticut State Senior Golf Association and the 200 Club Society of Senior Golfers. His large vegetable garden at Blue Bird Meadows, his home in Greenfield Hill, was a neighborhood landmark. He is survived by two daughters, Patricia Cooper of Roxbury, and Judy Maller of Pebble Beach, CA, four grandchildren, Kimberly Vidrio of Newport, OR, Jeannie Cooper of Leverett, MA, Kari Cooper of Danbury, and Garrett Cooper II of  Overland Park, KS, six great grandchildren, and five great great grandchildren. Memorials will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Memorial Garden Fund of the Greenfield Hill Congregational Church, 1045 Old Academy Road, Fairfield, CT 06824.
