Born on Feb 12, 1912, in Fall River MA, to Gregorio and Maria Freitas, Izaura (aka Sarah), passed away last Monday 1/28 of natural causes in Delray Beach FL, about two weeks shy of her 101st birthday. Aunt Sarah outlived all her other 7 siblings (Andre, Anthony(Doc), Armando, Gardner, Lionel, Roland, and Teresa). She married Michael Pavelko in 1937, and lived in NY for 50 years, where she worked for the House of the Holy Comforter in the Bronx. Uncle Mike passed away in 1984. She moved to Florida in 1995 to the same community as Virginia Freitas, one of three surviving sisters in law. Spending the last 18 years together they became very much devoted to each other. Aunt Sarah will be remembered for her kindness and generosity, her independent spirit, and her love for her family. She was loved by all that had the privilege to know her, from her friends at High Point, where she lived, to those she met on her walks, which is something she loved to do. Always eager to help in any way she could, her life and the way she lived it is an inspiration to us all. In many ways she was the glue that held the family together, and has been a part of many of our lives as far back as we can remember. She enjoyed spending summers in CT with nephews Armando Machado, and Leo Machado and his wife Marie. Among her dear friends and neighbors in Delray Beach are Roseanne and Frank, and Fred and Lily. She was something of a legend in her neighborhood. Everyone knew who she was and would offer her rides when they saw her walking. She always thanked them but proudly declined as she was fiercely independent, and insisted on doing things unaided. Aunt Sarah's other surviving sisters in law include Elfreida Freitas (Stratford, CT), and Mary Freitas (Ann Arbor, MI) . There are multiple generations of nieces and nephews across the country (MA, CT, PA, MD, NY, VA, CA, FL, UT). Aunt Sarah amazed everyone with her alertness, stamina, and mental agility, did crosswords and the Jumble, and kept busy with knitting, her main passion, up to the very end, despite her age. She will be missed by all. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:30am in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Bridgeport with a Mass of Christian Burial. Entombment will follow in the St. Michael's Garden Mausoleum, Stratford. Friends may call Saturday morning 9am – 10am in the Redgate-Hennessy Funeral Home, Main Street and Gorham Place, Trumbull, CT 06611. In lieu of flowers please include remembrances in Sarah's name to The Salesians Organization (http://www.salesianmissions.org), one of Aunt Sarah's favorite charities.
