IN LOVING MEMORY OF
James Casson
Stevens Sr.
May 28, 1932 – February 6, 2022
James Casson Stevens, Sr, 89, of Trumbull, CT passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, February 6th, 2022. Jim was born in Bridgeport, May 28, 1932, to Harold G. and Irene (Casson) Stevens. He grew up in Fairfield and graduated from Rodger Ludlow High School in 1951. In 1954 he graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from Long Island Agricultural and Technical Institute. He also served in the US Navy Reserve from 1950 to 1958.
A lifelong car enthusiast, Jim spent his younger years racing Formula 3 cars throughout the north east while working as a foreign auto service technician. After a bit of business bad luck, he began a new career as an agent with the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company where he worked until his retirement in 1987.
Always active, Jim took up running in his 40s and what started as a quest for better health turned into a passion which he continued to enjoy well into his 80s. He regularly ran many races across Connecticut where he won numerous metals and trophies for finishing in the top of his age group. Two of his favorites were the Trumbull Jingle Bell Run and the Westport Summer series but his goal each year was to compete in the New York City Marathon which he completed 23 times.
His other passion was traveling across the country with his wife, Ann, in their motorhome. Their annual trips allowed them to visit friends, see the sites and attend motorhome rallies across the country while also escaping the cold of New England winters.
Jim also enjoyed giving back to the community through volunteering with groups such as the American Hiking Society and Habitat for Humanity. He also was passionate blood donor since his teenage years giving over 20 gallons throughout his lifetime.
He is survived by his brother Jack Stevens (Marybeth) of Florida and sister Judith Matricardi of Indiana; daughters Jennifer Stevens of Port Chester, NY and Druanne Stevens of Naugatuck, CT; son James Casson Stevens, Jr of Watertown, CT; step-daughters Shirley Mayo, Patricia Barnes, and Kathleen Vrabel; daughter-in-law Nancy Symski; grandchildren Lynsey, Sophie, Jay, Stephen, Alicia, Stephen, Katelyn, Daniel, and Rachel; and great-grandchildren Noah, Autumn, Sawyer and Cherylyn; niece Hallie Stevens and nephews Chris Stevens, Jason Matricardi and Eric Matricardi and their families.
He was predeceased by his parents, wife Ann Symski Stevens and step-son Tom Symski.
Visitation hours will be held Friday February 11th from 4pm to 7pm at the Redgate-Hennessy Funeral Home, Main Street and Gorham Place, Trumbull. A prayer service will take place at 5:30pm. Interment will be at a later date.
