Obituary

Jeanne V. Johnston, age 89, of Hilton Head Island, SC. Jeanne and her husband Tom met after WWII in Detroit, Michigan. Tom had served in the US Army and Jeanne was a Navy Wave, stationed in Corpus Christi, Texas as a control tower operator. Jeanne worked in an office during the day and sang with several orchestras on the week-ends. They were married in 1946 and moved to Greenwich, CT in 1956. They raised their family there for 23 years. During that time Jeanne was the secretary in the office at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, and was the director of the church altar guild. In 1979 they retired and moved to Woodbury, Ct. They traveled around the US by car visiting friends and family each year. In 1986 they moved to Hilton Head Island, SC. and continued to travel each year. It was on one of these trips when Tom suddenly passed away. He was the love of her life. After Tom's death in 1991, Jeanne worked as a volunteer five days a week at the American Cancer Society office in Hilton Head.  She also volunteered one day a week at the Hilton Head Hospital gift shop. She helped direct and run the ACS Reach to Recovery program, having been a breast cancer survivor herself. For those who knew her well, she never forgot a birthday or anniversary, and cared very deeply for all who came into her life. For neighbors, co-workers, and people she would see every day at the grocery store, the bank, the post office, or driving through the gate to Sea Pines, she always had a big smile and a loving heart. Probably each one of them has a blanket that she lovingly crocheted, whether it was for a new baby, an illness, or a gift.  She always said it was great therapy for her. Jeanne had three brothers, Howard, Leonard, and Warren Frick, and a sister, Carmel Frick. She and her daughter Susan had just arrived in Connecticut for a Thanksgiving visit when she became ill. She died on Sunday morning November 28th surrounded by her family. She is survived by a daughter Susan, sons Thomas and Richard, eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11:00am in the St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 954 Lake Avenue, Greenwich, CT. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Jeanne's memory to the American Cancer Society, Hilton Head Office, 59 Pope Avenue, Suite 101, Hilton Head, SC 29928. The Redgate – Hennessy Funeral Home, Trumbull is assisting the family. To send online condolences please visit www.redgatehennessy.com
