Obituary

Jerome J. Mayer, age 91 of Easton died Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at River Glen in Southbury.  He was the beloved husband of the late Betty Kinard Mayer.  Born in Danbury, he was raised in Newtown before moving to Easton.  Mr. Mayer graduated from Fairfield University and attended the University of Rome under a Fulbright scholarship. He lived and taught in Branford, CT before moving to Easton in 1959, where he lived until recently.  He traveled to Austria with his family and taught in Innsbruck under a second Fulbright scholarship in 1968.  For most of his career he taught Latin and was chair of the foreign language department at Joel Barlow High School where he was well loved by his students. He was active in his parish at Notre Dame of Easton and he taught religious education for many years after his retirement.  He enjoyed gardening, reading, and his cats. Survivors include three sons, Jerome Mayer and his wife Katharine Dougherty of Newtown, Anton Mayer and his wife Mary Beth of Southbury, Paul Mayer and Susan Chapin of Sandy Hook, daughter Bonnie Levy and her husband Richard of Cheshire, grandchildren Deirdre Dougherty, Gregory Mayer, Emily Warner, Mary Claire, Philip, Carolyn, and Bridget Mayer, Madeline and Andrew Levy, Margaret, Paul Joseph, John and Steven Mayer, great grandchildren, Dylan Barrow and Cameron Duggan. In addition to his wife Betty he was also predeceased by his daughter Annette S. Mayer. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10:00am meeting directly in Notre Dame of Easton Church, 655 Morehouse Road, Easton with a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in Huntingtown Cemetery, Newtown. Friends may call Monday 4-8pm in the Redgate-Hennessy Funeral Home, Main Street and Gorham Place, Trumbull.
