Obituary

John Addison Ackley, Sr. died peacefully in his home late Tuesday night, surrounded by family and caregivers. He was 93 years old. John Ackley was born in Johnstown, New York on December 1, 1914, and the son of Mary S. and Erle L. Ackley. Erle Ackley was Superintendent of Schools 1910-1948. John was educated in Johnstown High School, Class of 1932, and St. Lawrence University, Class of 1936, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. He served in the military service during World War II in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy from 1942-1946. Sea Duty - Coastal Patrol – YP-274 on the Maine Coast, Coastal Transport – APC-86 – Atlantic Coast, Destroyer – USS Woodworth – Pacific Coast, Destroyer Escort – USS Weaver – Pacific Ocean. In 1946, John was wed to Jean Elizabeth Parker in Poughkeepsie, NY. Jean was a model for I. Magnin Department Store; they met in San Francisco during WWII. John was a resident of Fairfield, CT since 1969. He is a retired Executive President of Pyrofax Gas Corporation, a Subsidary of Union Carbide Corporation. He also was a Vice President at Sprague Meter, a Subsidary of Textron, Inc. He was a member of Brooklawn Country Club for many years and enjoyed bowling and golfing there. He is survived by two sons; John and his wife Lorraine of Longwood, Florida and Parker and his wife Gwen of Fairfield, CT. A grandson, Paul, son of John A. Ackley, Jr, also survives him. He is predeceased by his brothers and sister: Frederick, Larry, Harold J. and Emma M. Ackley. His wife Jean died in 1992. Funeral services will be held, Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the Redgate – Hennessy Funeral Home, Main Street and Gorham Place, Trumbull. Interment will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Fairfield, with full military honors.
