John P. Clyons died peacefully at St. Vincent's Hospital in Bridgeport on December 5, 2020. He was 96 years old. He was born in Bridgeport CT on November 26, 1924 the son of Michael Clyons and Katherin(Lavin) Clyons. He had an older brother William who predeceased him and an older sister Margaret "Peggy" Hennessy who has survived him. John was very proud of his Irish heritage. He was married to Theresa (Mazzucco) Clyonsfor 68 years. She passed away in 2019. John Clyons served in the US Army during World War II with the 94th Infantry Division and the 8th Armored Division and saw action during the Battle of the Bulge. He attained the rank of Master Sergeant and received a Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, American Theater Campaign Ribbon and a European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon. During his working life he was a salesman in fuel oil sales until the first oil crisis in 1973 and then started his own business Pequot Promotions which dealt with advertising specialty and promotional products. He relished the creative challenge of that enterpriseand was very successful. John or "Jack" as he was often called or "Slug", a nickname originating from when he was a kid growing up on Worth St and on Maplewood Ave in Bridgeport, was an intellectually curious person who liked to read and learn about different things. He developed into a pretty good cook and had an ongoing friendly argument with Theresa as to who made the best tomato sauce. He was a fan of classical music and opera. He and Theresa, "Trep", would attend concerts and operas in New York City. They also liked to go to Cape Cod, Maine and Saratoga. John was a big sports fan particularly of the Pittsburgh Pirates. He actually met HonusWagner in the 1930s after attending a game at the Polo Grounds. He was also a big Army football fan and would go to West Point to watch the team play. John served as basketball coach for St. Augustine's Cathedral School in the mid to-late 1960s. John is survived by four children: Paul Clyons (Janice) of Campton, NH, Thomas Clyons (Katie) of Trumbull, Kate Clyons Shehan of Vero Beach, FL and Jacqueline Sweeney (Chris) of Ohio. He is survived by 11 grandchildren: Erika Espindle of Barrington RI, Travis Clyons of Phildelphia PA, Timothy Koskuba of Charleston, SC, Kevin Koskuba of Florida, Griffin Koskuba of Florida, Carolyn Clyons of Trumbull, Elizabeth Clyons of Fairfield, Brendan Clyons of Trumbull, Jack Sweeney of Chicago, IL, Anika Sweeney of Ohio and Lillian Sweeney of Ohio. He is survived by two great grandchildren: Leo Espindle of Barrington, RI and his brother Julian Espindle of Barrington, RI. Memorial services will be deferred until a later time pending general health conditions.Interment was private in Nichols Farm Burial Grounds with full military honors.
