John Joseph Dunigan, age 88, loving husband of 64 years to Edith Veronica (Ronnie) Thompson Dunigan passed away peacefully at Saint Vincent's Medical Center on Friday, December 5, 2008. Born in Bridgeport, he resided in Trumbull for the past 45 years where he was a member of Saint Theresa's Parish. In addition to his wife, John is survived by his loving children who include daughters, Ellen Brigham and her husband Richard of Plano, Texas, Janis and her husband Gerard Coutu of Irvine, California, Virginia Dunigan of Trumbull and his sons, Michael and his wife Susan Dunigan and Patrick and his wife Kim Grudeski all of Shelton. His beloved grandchildren include Kathryn O'Shields-Blackman and her husband Burke Blackman, Luke O'Shields and his wife Melissa O'Shields, James Dunigan, Brian Dunigan, Kevin Dunigan, Stephen Dunigan and Paul Coutu. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. The son of the late Francis P. Dunigan (Former Bridgeport Board of Education President) and Mabel Swan Dunigan, he was predeceased by his infant son Timothy, his sister Elizabeth Billingslea and his brother Francis Dunigan. Mr. Dunigan graduated from Harding High School in 1939 and joined the U.S. Marine Corp in 1942 where he obtained the rank of Sergeant serving as a drill instructor at Parris Island before going overseas. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds he received during the battle for Okinawa in 1945. He graduated from the University of Connecticut with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1951 and received his Professional Engineer's license from the State of Connecticut in 1965. After working for building contractors in the Bridgeport area, he was named Director of the Physical Plant for Fairfield University where he was employed for 24 years before retiring in 1986. He was a member of the VFW Post 9460, the 6th Marine Division Association and past member of the Trumbull Exchange Club and the Gaelic-American Club. Regarded for his integrity, John will remain a strong, loving force in the lives of his family and friends. Funeral services with a Mass of Christian Burial and Military Honors will be held Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at 1:00 pm in St. Theresa Church 5301 Main Street, Trumbull. Friends may call Monday, December 8, 2008 4:00 pm-7:30 pm in the Redgate-Hennessy Funeral Home 4 Gorham Place Trumbull.
