John R. Lyddy MD, 90, beloved husband of Helen C. Lyddy passed away on October 3, 2009 at Bridgeport Hospital with his family by his side. Born in Bridgeport, he was the son of the late Superintendant John A. Lyddy and Lauretta C. Lyddy.  He is survived by his brother Dr. Gregory Lyddy and wife Barbara, and is predeceased by brothers, Rev. Vincent E. Lyddy and Hon. Raymond C. Lyddy. He is also survived by a son John A. Lyddy II of Whitingham, VT, and son Jack; Dr. Maura C. Lyddy of Trumbull and husband Brian Spellman and daughter Maureen; Laura E. Lyddy of Silverthorne, CO; Paula Newberry and husband Dawson of Newtown and children Scott and Laura; AnneMarie Lyddy and daughter Molly of Wilmington, VT, and a large adoring extended family. A graduate of College of the Holy Cross and NYU College of Medicine, he completed his residency in Ob Gyn at Yale.  A WWII Veteran, he served as Naval Officer in all theatres, additionally he was promoted to Lt. Commander during the Korean Conflict.  He practiced general medicine in Bridgeport in his early years, and then established a private practice in Stratford where he ushered generations of local residents into the world. He served at Bridgeport Hospital for many years, both as Ob Gyn Dpt. Chair and Chief of Staff; he was also on faculty at Yale New Haven and Bridgeport Hospitals and mentored many generations of physicians and nurses; he was respected by his colleagues, students and patients and was loved by all. Balancing family and professional obligations, Dr. Lyddy also served as a valuable member of the community and Church.  He was an accomplished carpenter, avid golfer, loved sports and the Mets; in retirement he took his renowned surgical skills to his yard and maintained a precisely manicured lawn. Funeral services will be celebrated Wednesday, October 7 at 11:00am, meeting directly in St. Theresa Church, 5301 Main Street, Trumbull, with a Mass of Christian Burial.
