John (Jack) E. Sullivan, age 83, of Bridgeport entered into eternal rest on January 26, 2009 at the Carolton Chronic and Convalescent Hospital, Fairfield. A lifelong resident of Bridgeport and son of the late John and Catherine Fitzpatrick Sullivan, he attended Central High School, the Connecticut Electronics Institute and the Lee Institution. Known for football and track at Central High as well as outstanding fast pitch softball and baseball on several local championship teams, Jack was best known for his beautiful Irish tenor voice for which he won many awards and testimonials singing with many of the area's outstanding bands. His solo performance in "This is the Army" produced by Irving Berlin with the 5th Army Band in Italy before 16,000 wounded troops under the command of Gen. Mark Clark was his proudest moment. While in service to his country during the Italian Campaign with the 85th Custer Infantry Division, Jack was awarded two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, a Presidential Unit Citation, a combat infantry badge and two Battle Stars. After the service he was a supervisor for Columbia Records and later a service manager for the Hewlett Packard and Remington-Dupont Companies. Always ready to reach out a helping hand, he was a proud Irish American with wit, wisdom, warmth and gift of gab known only to the Irish. He was truly one of a kind. Jack was predeceased by his loving brother, Raymond Sullivan; and is survived by his wife; Olga; his sister, Patricia Zelle of Shelton; eight nieces and nephews and several grand nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Friday at 9:15 a.m. from the Redgate-Hennessy Funeral Home, Main Street and Gorham Place, Trumbull and at 10 a.m. in St. Andrew Church with a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment with full military honors will follow in St. Michael's Cemetery, Stratford. Friends may call Thursday 4-8pm.
