Obituary

John J. Tiernan, age 100, passed away on Wednesday, August 27, 2014, at St. Joseph Center. Born in Bridgeport to the late John and Catherine (Byrnes) Tiernan, John was a longtime Trumbull resident. He was the beloved husband for 63 years of the late Mary Totora Tiernan.  John retired as traffic manager for Bassick Company in 1978 after 43 years. He was very active in the shipping and transportation field serving as Past President of Delta Nu Alpha Transportation Fraternity, the Bridgeport Traffic Association, Connecticut and Bassick Quarter Century Club, Past CT State Chairman National Transportation Week, and Past Executive Board Member New England Shippers-Carriers Association. He was an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Theresa Council. As a young man, John played baseball in the Bridgeport inner city leagues and often spoke fondly of games at Seaside Park. He was an avid UConn Huskies Basketball fan, Notre Dame Football, St Louis Cardinal, and NY Yankee fan. John loved to write about his family, his youth and about Bridgeport. He took great pride in his published letters in the CT Post and Catholic Transcript. The consummate family man, John played a major role in the lives of his two granddaughters by whom he will be greatly missed. Survives include a daughter, Patricia Schreir, granddaughters, Michele and Theresa Sandall, many nieces and nephews including Candida Faris and husband James, grand niece and nephew Alisa Cusack and Matthew Faris. He was predeceased by his brothers Thomas, Robert, Raymond, Joseph, and sister Catherine. Funeral Services will be held Monday, September 8, 2014 at 11:00am at St. Theresa Church, 5301 Main Street, Trumbull with a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Friends may call Monday morning 9:00am -10:15am in the Redgate-Hennessy Funeral Home Main Street and Gorham Place, Trumbull. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to the Special Olympics Connecticut.
