Obituary

Leete Parmelee Doty died on Thursday July 8, 2010 at Meadow Ridge Community in Redding CT. Born January 29, 1917 in Yonkers, NY, he was the son of Raymond Jones Doty and Sadie Parmelee Doty. As a youth he lived in Milwaukee, Colorado Springs, Tucson and Reading\Wyomissing, PA, with summers in Fair Haven, CT. He graduated from the Asheville School in Asheville, NC and Yale University in 1939 with a degree in mechanical engineering. As a Yale student he and a friend roughed it on a trip across South America that included travels over the Peruvian Andes on foot and mule back. Upon graduation, he worked at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford, CT. In Hartford he met and married Marjorie Howe Scott, his beloved wife of 68 years. He played a key role in PWA's expansion during the early days of WWII. Assigned to PWA's new plant in Kansas City he supervised planning & operation of aircraft engine assembly and testing during the war years. After the war he returned to Pratt Whitney in CT and in 1950 earned a MA in Business & Engineering Administration through the Sloan Fellowship Program for Executive Development at MIT in Cambridge, MA. In the years following he managed PWA plants in Southington and North Haven, CT and factory operations in East Hartford. In 1958 he transferred to Sikorsky Aircraft in Stratford, CT where he served as Assistant General Manager and Vice President for Operations. In 1967 he joined the Bullard Company in Bridgeport, becoming Vice President for Manufacturing. This was followed by 12 years with Management Concepts, a business consulting firm he established in Bridgeport. For 40 years he lived close by the Greenfield Hill Congregational Church in Fairfield. The church meant a great deal to him and he was active in its affairs. Committed to Bridgeport's welfare, he served as United Way Chairman, Rotary President and on the Board of Council of Churches of Greater Bridgeport.  A basement work shop was an important part of his life. His inventive mind led to the creation of numerous products. He loved the outdoors. Sailing, climbing, back-packing, downhill skiing (even at 90) and yard work were cherished activities.   He believed it was the Boy Scout trail to Eagle Scout that did the most in setting a course for him. He was a devoted father and grandfather, greatly loved by all of his family and friends. He was devoted to his wife, Marjorie, their three daughters, their husbands and his seven grandchildren. Always positive and encouraging, he provided opportunities for all to experience adventure and know the joys and fullness of life. Above all he led an exemplary life underscored by integrity, humility, and love and respect for others.  This and his appreciation for the wonders of this world and all it possibilities is his lasting legacy. He was predeceased by his brother, Harrison Doty, and his sister, Carol Wilson. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie, daughters Carol Kalauskas and her husband Charles of Arlington, MA, Sarah Morton and her husband Michael of Big Horn, WY, Marilyn Shaver and her husband Troy of Spring Island, SC, and by grandchildren: Ethan Morton and his wife KC, Mallory Morton Elliott and her husband Mike, Barrett and Ryan Shaver, and Rebecca, Sarah and Peter Kalauskas, and great-granddaughter, Vivian Elliott.
