Mary C. Lynch, age 97, beloved wife of the late James E. Lynch, passed away on September 26, 2016, at Lord Chamberlain Rehabilitation Center in Stratford, Connecticut. Born in Manhattan on July 22, 1919, the daughter of Lawrence and Bridget Powers of Waterford, Ireland, Mary proudly described herself as "Irish, American born." Mary had been a long-time resident of Stamford, Connecticut, and Naperville, Illinois, before moving to Heritage Village in Southbury in 1998. She moved to The Hearth in Southbury two years ago and over the years made many close friends wherever she lived. Mary met her husband, Jim, when they were co-workers in Manhattan for a religious goods supplier, staffing the gift store together in St. Patrick's Cathedral. While Jim served his country in Europe and the Aleutian Islands during World War II, Mary supported the war effort back home in New York as an employee of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Foley Square. Mary and Jim were married when he returned from the war. Mary stayed home to raise her children and then resumed her career in 1963, retiring from General Electric Credit Corporation in 1983 after 20 years. Mary will be lovingly missed for her smile, her sense of humor, her faith, and her unflagging independence. She was predeceased by her husband, Jim, and her brother, James Powers. Mary is survived by her daughter Judith O'Callaghan (husband J. Brien) of Bethel, CT, sons Lawrence Lynch (wife Eileen) of Fairfield, CT, and James Lynch (wife Lada) of Scottsdale, AZ; nine grandchildren; three step grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; seven nephews; and her sisters-in-law, Anne Hart and Adele Powers. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, November 4, 2016, 10:00a.m., at Sacred Heart Church in Southbury, CT. Mary will be inurned next to her husband in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA.
