IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mirene
Gomez
January 22, 1938 – April 5, 2023
Mirene "Mimi" Gomez was born in Palma Soriano, Cuba, into a family of journalists, farmers, and patriots who fought in the Cuban War of Independence against Spain, and with the US forces in the War of 1898.
From an early age, Mimi's intellectual curiosity and desire to excel were evident. In the 1950s, she attended Teacher's College in Cuba, becoming a competitive cross-country athlete. Following her move to the United States, she continued her teaching profession at Elias Howe school in Bridgeport, where she was a bilingual kindergarten teacher for 25 years, She also pursued her formal graduate studies at Sacred Heart University, eventually earning a Doctorate in Education.
While living in Havana, Cuba, she became a student at the Alliance Francaise and immersed herself in the French language and culture, becoming certified as a simultaneous translator for French and French-speaking governments and cultural delegations to Cuba.
Following her retirement, Mimi traveled extensively throughout Europe, settling down in the Town of Shelton to be the prime caretaker for her ailing mother. She loved her neighbors Dawn and Al and went to many of their gatherings, as they made her feel like family.
Mimi was intensely patriotic and cherished everything about her adoptive country. She ran for elected state office a number of times, being at the front slate of candidates who, in 1982, met with President Ronald Reagan.
