Obituary

Newman Marius Marsilius, Jr., aged 92 years, died peacefully at home in Easton, CT. Beloved brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, and great grandfather, he was born in Boston March 6, 1918 to Newman and Helen Hansen Marsilius.  Mr. Marsilius lived a long, productive life and was well known for his contributions to the political, public and business sectors.  He graduated from Harding High School in Bridgeport, received a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering from Cornell University in 1940 and a masters degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1942. During World War II, he served in the Africa and the Middle East as well as China, Burma and India, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Ordnance Corps. He received the Bronze Medal for meritorious service.   In 1945 he wed Marie Elizabeth Kuechle and had a wonderful marriage for 63 years until her death in 2008.  In 1946, he joined the Producto Machine Company, a family-operated machine tool manufacturer in Bridgeport and served with his brother, Philip, until his retirement in 1987. Their father, Newman Sr., also a graduate of M.I.T., assumed control of the business in 1928 when the predecessor company, Bilton Machine, failed after World War I.  The company, which is known today as the PMT Group (Producto and Moore Tool), with plants in New York, New Hampshire and Bridgeport, is a manufacturer of high precision tooling and machine tools for global markets.  Mr. Marsilius' son, Newman III, and his grandsons still operate the business.  Upon returning from service in WWII, Mr. Marsilius organized the Trumbull Young Republican Club in 1948. He served as Representative from Trumbull in the Lower House of the General Assembly from 1951 – 53 and Senator from the 25th District for two terms, 1955 and 1957. He served on several committees, Education, Transportation and Finance, chairing the Senate Finance Committee in 1957. In the legislature, he was a strong advocate for tax and governmental reform, expansion of the University of Connecticut and educational systems, as well as the Connecticut Turnpike. His active political career ended with a bid for the Republican gubernatorial nomination in 1960. He served as a delegate to the 1964 Republican National Convention representing Connecticut. While his later participation in the political sphere was limited to financial contributions and fundraising, American politics remained a lifelong interest.  Over a span of four decades, Mr. Marsilius served as director on many corporate boards: Aquarion (Bridgeport Hydraulic), Acme United, Brown & Sharpe, Connecticut National Bank, and Shawmut Bank. Additional business related directorships included the Bridgeport Chamber of Commerce, National Association of Manufacturers and Manufacturers Association of Connecticut.   He was dedicated to public service throughout his life and served many public welfare, educational and civic organizations, including as Director of the Bridgeport Red Cross, Bridgeport Hospital, Bridgeport Y.M.C.A., the University of Bridgeport, and the United Way.  He was a tireless fundraiser and advocate, well known for his leadership in many development campaigns, in particular The United Negro College Fund, the Y.M.C.A., and the University of Bridgeport.  He leaves behind a brother, Philip R. Marsilius of Bridgeport; four children Newman III of Newtown, Diane Nicholls of Arlington, MA, Barbara Link of Rehoboth, MA, and Kathy Bourque of North Attleboro, MA; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; many friends, and colleagues. He will be sorely missed. In lieu of flowers the family requests gifts be made to the Aspetuck Land Trust (P.O.Box 444, Westport, CT 06881), Mid-Fairfield  Hospice (P.O.Box 489, Wilton, CT ) or a Hospice of your choice.  Visiting hours will be held at the Redgate-Hennessey Funeral Home, Four Gorham Place in Trumbull on Wednesday June 16 from 4 to 7 PM.  A service celebrating his life will be held on June 17 at 4:30 PM at the Congregational Church of Easton, 336 Westport Road, Easton. A reception will follow at home (120 Norton Road, Easton).
