Obituary

Dr. Patricia A. O'Looney, age 57 of Bridgeport, Vice President of Biomedical Research and Director of Grants at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, New York City passed away Saturday, February 16, 2013 after a long battle with cancer. Patricia was born in Bridgeport daughter of the late John J. O'Looney Jr. M.D., and is survived by her mother Marjorie Curran O'Looney and a sister Kathleen O'Looney Adams and her husband Capt. William J. Adams, Jr., USN of New Market, MD, two nephews and two nieces; Lt. William J. Adams III, USN, LT Maura K. Adams, USNR, 1stLT John J. Adams, USA, and MIDN 4/C Margaret E. Adams, USNR, her aunt Margaret Lathrop of CA, her Godmother Carol Ramik of Stratford, and several cousins. Patricia was a lifelong parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Parish, and a 1968 graduate of their school. A graduate of Lauralton Hall, class of 1972, she served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and was awarded the Mother Mary Augustine Claven Award in 1990. Dr. O'Looney holds a bachelor's degree in Molecular Biology from Regis College, Weston, MA, and a Master's Degree and a Ph.D. in Medical Biochemistry from the George Washington University Medical School in Washington, D.C. After completing her postdoctoral training, Dr. O'Looney held a dual faculty appointment in the Departments of Medicine and Biochemistry at the Medical School where she conducted research studies in lipoprotein metabolism in autoimmune diseases. She is a past recipient of the New Investigator Research Award from the National Institutes of Health and is the author of several publications in scientific/medical journals. Her Professional Memberships include American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, New York Academy of Sciences, American Heart Association, American Association for the Advancement of Sciences, Association for Women in Science, and The Mid Atlantic Society. She is also listed in several editions of Who's Who, including that of American Women, of Men and Women in Science, Who's Who in Medicine & Healthcare, and Who's Who in the East. Dr. O'Looney's contributions toward moving us closer to a world free of MS will long be remembered and appreciated by all who knew and worked with her. To honor her substantial role in forwarding MS research and her particular interest in nurturing the careers of postdoctoral research fellows, the keynote lecture at National MS Society's upcoming Tykeson Fellowship Conference will be named "The Patricia A. O'Looney Memorial Lecture." Patricia was a member of the Gaelic American Club. She will be remembered for her infectious laugh and those beautiful blue eyes. Patricia's family would like to thank the nurses on the oncology floor at St. Vincent's Medical Center and the nurses at the Carolton for the wonderful care they provided for her. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11:00a.m., meeting directly in Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 545 Stratfield Road, Fairfield, with a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in St. Michael's Cemetery, Stratford. Friends may call Friday from 4 to 8:00p.m., in the Redgate – Hennessy Funeral Home, Main Street and Gorham Place, Trumbull.
