Obituary

Paul D. Mullen, age 74, of Monroe, passed away Saturday, September 8, 2012 at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport. He fought a brave battle against leukemia. Paul was the beloved husband of Diane Mullen to whom he was married for 38 years. Besides his wife, survivors include his two loving children, Karen Mullen, David Mullen and his wife Caitlin, a beautiful granddaughter and a brother, Joseph Kevin Mullen. He was predeceased by his parents, Frank C. Mullen and Mary J. Mullen and two brothers, Frank Mullen and John Mullen. Paul was born in Framingham, MA. He graduated from St. John's Preparatory School in Worcester, MA and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Worcester State Teacher's College in Massachusetts and a Master of Arts Degree from Fairfield University. Mr. Mullen was involved in the field of education for many years. He taught Social Studies in the Fairfield Public School System at Roger Ludlowe High School, Fairfield High School and Fairfield Ludlowe High School. Teaching was his life-long passion. He volunteered as a key club advisor to students in the Fairfield High School system for many years and coached both soccer and lacrosse for the Fairfield High School system's Athletic Department. He loved working with students. Paul taught college courses as an adjunct professor at Western Connecticut State University, Norwalk Community College and lectured at Sacred Heart University. During the summers he worked as a Security Guard at Wolfe Park, Great Hollow Lake and Lake Zoar for the town of Monroe Parks and Recreation Department. Mr. Mullen served his country as a Lieutenant, Junior Grade in the U.S. Navy. He was a parishioner at St. Jude Parish in Monroe and served there as a Eucharistic Minister. He also helped to prepare meals in the churches social hall kitchen for the First Saturday Mass Breakfast Program. Paul was a 3rd degree member of the Blessed Pope John XXIII Council 5987 Knights of Columbus regular assembly at St. Jude's and was scheduled to be recognized as "Knight of the Year" later this September. He also was a 4th degree member of the Reverend McCarten Assembly No. 119 of the Knights of Columbus. He especially enjoyed volunteering annually at the Special Olympics at Southbury Training School as well as visiting the residents there on a monthly basis. Also, he worked in the St. Jude Social hall kitchen at the Knight of Columbus Italian dinner fund raisers and served on clean up detail at the St. Jude Italian Festival for many years. Paul was also active in community service. Recently he volunteered two days a week at Masonicare of Newtown visiting patients and volunteering in the cafeteria. He also collected books and delivered them to the Home for Veterans in Bridgeport. Mr. Mullen was also a member of the Retired Educators of Fairfield and just recently a member of the Monroe Senior Center. He was an avid reader of books, enjoyed fishing as a means of relaxing and was proud of his Irish heritage. He will be missed by all whose lives he touched. Funeral services will be held Friday, September 14, 2012 at 9:00a.m., from the Redgate – Hennessy Funeral Home, Main Street and Gorham Place, Trumbull, and at 10:00a.m., in St. Jude Church, Monroe, with a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Trumbull. Friends may call Thursday from 4p.m. to 7p.m. in the funeral home.
