Obituary

Dr. Peter Stelos, born in Lowell MA on May 17, 1923 to Achileas and Marianthi (Kouturakos) Stelos passed away peacefully on February 19 at his residence in Cambridge Manor in Fairfield.  He was the fifth born child out of 8 children, and the first male. Peter was a World War II veteran, having volunteered for the US Army in December 1942. He served as a staff sergeant in the Corps of Engineering. His awards included the Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Medal, the European African Medal and the Eastern Theater campaign ribbon, Asia Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Service Star.  After the War, he graduated from Berea College with a major in Chemistry and then earned his Master's degree and PhD in Microbiology from the University of Chicago. He worked and taught in cancer research at the University of Chicago, Yale in New Haven, Roswell Park in Buffalo, Hannemann Medical in Philadelphia and returned to Boston with Harvard Medical School. He was predeceased by his sisters Olymbiatha (Helen) Straley, Aphrodite (Jenny) Helmar, Anthoula (Ann) Moser, Alexandria (Mary) Mohidin and his brother Dr. Vasili (William) Stylos.  He leaves Panayotis (Paul) Stylos of Northhampton, MA and his sister Margarita (Eunice) Hanson of Easton, Connecticut. He was Uncle Peter to all of the many offspring of his siblings and was dearly loved by his whole family, who looked upon him as a source of Greek history, legend and importance of Greece through the ages. Funeral services will be held Friday at 12p.m., NOON, in the Redgate – Hennessy Funeral Home, Main Street and Gorham Place, Trumbull, with Fr. Andreas Vithoulkas, Presbyter of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, officiating. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. Visiting hours will be Friday from 10:00a.m. to 12:00p.m., in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Berea College, CPO 2216, Berea, KY 40404.
