Obituary

Richard Andrews, 92, died of cancer on May 4, 2024 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. He is survived by his wife, Karyn, his children Richard Anthony, Sean and Johanna, as well as six grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son Christopher.

For his entire life, Richard's career was music. A graduate of the Juilliard School of Music, he was a student of the composer Vincent Persichetti. After earning his B.S., he received a M.M. from Philadelphia Conservatory, but his education was not limited to classical music for, as a teenager, he spent many hours under the tutelage of the great jazz pianist, Willie "the Lion" Smith.

As a composer, Richard's output was considerable with work ranging from symphonies and art songs to piano sonatas and pop songs. He was a crossover artist and performed in Manhattan venues ranging from jazz and rock clubs—Reno Sweeney and Max's Kansas City—to Carnegie Recital Hall and Town Hall.

He was also an organist and held positions as director of music at a number of Fairfield County churches. His last post was Grace Episcopal Church in Norwalk. He taught piano too, with students ranging from beginners through the advanced levels.

Seemingly endlessly creative, he continued making music until the end of his life when he provided piano accompaniments for his daughter's singing and his youngest grandson's drum playing. Less than twenty-four hours before he died, he entertained the hospital chaplain and nurses with his improvised bebop scat singing.

Though Richard will be greatly missed, family and friends can take comfort through still hearing his sounds on his CDs, YouTube channels and publisher's web site.
