Sherry Lonergan, age 55, of Trumbull, CT. died peacefully at home with her family at her side on Tuesday, December 30, 2008 after battling ovarian cancer for the past 8 years. Sherry was also a breast cancer survivor for 20 years. Born in Hyde Park, New York, Sherry met and married Dana Lonergan of Cape Cod, MA.after graduating from Franklin Pierce College in New Hampshire. She went on to become a teacher and mentor at the Bridgeport Regional Vocational Aquaculture School for many years. She was also active on various committees as chair, Co-Chair and Chair for the American Cancer Society's Trumbull/Monroe Relay for Life. She was very proud to have been able to help with raising over $500,000.00 for the American Cancer Society. Along with Dana, Sherry also participated in many Trumbull Rotary and Lakewood Trumbull YMCA projects and events over the years. In addition to her husband, Dana, and their 2 children, Justin , a Captain in the US Air Force Judge Advocate General, and his wife, Sharon, of Seattle, WA, and Carly ,who is currently completing a masters degree in Counseling Psychology in Boston, MA. She is survived by a sister, Christine Fitchett and husband, Gary, of Poughkeepsie, NY. She is also survived by several relatives including mother-in-law Anne Lonergan, sisters in law and brothers in law: Dona and Steve Swinamer, Debra and Paul Sullivan, Don and Mary Lou Lonergan, David and Amy Lonergan, Denis and Linda Lonergan, Denise and Don Young, Dori and Matt Kais, and Drew Lonergan , all of Cape Cod. In addition, a brother in law and sister in law from CT : Darin and Laura Lonergan, as well as a sister in law and brother in law from FL., Donel and Stephen Beals. She is also survived by 25 nieces and nephews. Sherry was predeceased by her parents, Delilah and Paul Wheaton of Hyde Park, NY and her father-in-law, Don Lonergan of Cape Cod, MA. Many of Sherry's fondest memories included summer vacations on Cape Cod and Candlewood Lake and winter vacations in Sarasota, Florida. The family would like to especially recognize the exceptional caring and compassionate staff at Blackrock Medical Group, Trumbull, CT where Sherry had been a patient over the last 20 years. Friends may greet her family Friday 4-8pm in the Redgate-Hennessy Funeral Home, Main Street and Gorham Place, Trumbull.
