IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sophonie
Moise
May 23, 1930 – October 11, 2024
Sophonie Moise, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, was called home to be with our Lord and Savior on October 11, 2024, at the age of 94. She passed peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born on May 23, 1930, in Corail, Haiti, Sophonie was the eldest of four children born to Nelia Felix Moise and Philias Moise. She is predeceased by her sister Jeannine Moise and is survived by her sisters Agnes Moise Francois of California and Nellie Moise Berry of New Jersey.
On October 12, 1950, Sophonie married Farvard Guerrier, and together they raised nine wonderful children: Jean Fritz (Tito), Vivianne, Jocelyn, Sergio, Marie Gerald, Darlene, Nelia Maguarette, Marie Taylor, and Nadia. Sophonie was a devoted mother whose love and sacrifice shaped the lives of her children and grandchildren.
In Haiti, Sophonie and her sisters established a bakery and a wholesale food business, showcasing her entrepreneurial spirit. She was a true "Jane-of-all-trades," excelling in painting, sewing, cooking, and retail work throughout her life.
In pursuit of a better future for her family, Sophonie migrated to the United States on December 24, 1983, at the age of 53, alongside her late daughter Marie Taylor. She joined her late mother, Nelia Felix, and late niece, Georgianna in Brooklyn, NY. Sophonie's home became a sanctuary of love and support, where her generosity and kindness touched the lives of many, both family and friends.
In 1993, following the tragic passing of her daughter Marie Gerald, Sophonie took guardianship of her grandchildren Caroline and Daphney, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to family. She later moved to Connecticut, where she was joined by her remaining children and grandchildren.
Sophonie aspired to return to Haiti after her retirement to continue her legacy of love and service to her community. However, health challenges and the devastating earthquake in 2011 prevented her from realizing that dream. Despite her struggles, she embodied resilience and strength, proving time and again that her spirit could not be dimmed.
Sophonie leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and compassion that will forever resonate in the hearts of her children, grandchildren, and all who knew her. Her unwavering faith and commitment to her family serve as an enduring inspiration.
Sophonie is survived by her two sisters, Agnes Moise Francois and Nellie Moise Berry. Four daughters: Vivianne, Darlene, Nelia Maguarette and Nadia. Twenty plus grandchildren including: Jean Fritz Junior, Fabienne, Sardou, Vanessa, Caroline, Nathalie, Marvin, Djenny, Daphney, Peterson, Samantha, Ricky, Jamie, Jonathan, Shaquille, Bianca, Sebastien, Giovanni and Christel. And many great grandchildren.
