Obituary

Susan Varga Chrien, age 93, of Bridgeport, CT (formerly of Bellport, New York) passed away peacefully on March 3. She was predeceased by her husband Robert E. Chrien.

Susan was born on December 3, 1928 in Cleveland, Ohio to the late George and Suzanna (Bobka) Varga of Ohio and Slovakia.

Susan graduated from The Cleveland Institute of Art in 1949 with a degree in Figure Drawing. She continued her studies at Kent State University, graduating with a Bachelor's of Science in Art Education in 1950.  She went on to earn her Master's Degree in Art History from Western Reserve University in 1952.

Susan had a long and distinguished career teaching art, first in her home state of Ohio, and later for the South Country School District in Bellport, New York, where she lived most of her life. Upon retirement, Susan worked for the Town of Brookhaven teaching art classes to senior citizens.  Later, she taught art classes at the Watermark, a retirement community in Bridgeport, CT, where she moved with her husband in 2011.

In addition to her love of teaching, Susan was involved with the South Bay Art Association in Bellport, NY, for over 50 years, holding many prominent positions and winning many awards for her artwork. She served as President, Vice President and Treasurer, and also as Chairperson for the annual Membership Show and the Fourth of July "Artists on the Lane" exhibits. She was beloved and respected for her many contributions to the local Bellport art community.

Susan had many creative pursuits including quilting, sewing, cross-stitch, costume design, scenery design, calligraphy, sculpture, watercolor and acrylic painting, collage, and mono- printing.  She was an active member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Patchogue, New York, and Salem Lutheran Church in Bridgeport, CT, participating in bible study and craft-making groups.

Susan was an active member of the Watermark Arts and Culture Committee and the Resident's Council, and her artwork was regularly featured within the community. She enjoyed going to the symphony, the theatre and participating in the monthly religious discussions at her community.

Susan is survived by her four children, Robert E. Chrien and his wife Lise, of Los Alamos, New Mexico, Katherine Chrien and her husband Harry Rogers of Leland, North Carolina, Elizabeth Zarrilli of Norwalk, CT, and Thomas Chrien and his wife Nadine of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA. She is also survived by her loving grandchildren, Jennie and her husband Steve, Natalie and her husband Eric, Naomi, Jonathan, Zachary and Justin.

Susan is remembered as a generous person to family and friends alike, and was always willing to lend a hand in any way that she was able. Her sweet and humble nature endeared her to many in her community.
