Jane E. Birge Greenwood, 87, of Trumbull, beloved wife of the late Richard F. Greenwood, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday morning, January 6, 2019, with her family by her side.

Born in Stratford, CT on May 24, 1931, daughter of the late Raymond B. and Marie Graham Birge. Jane was a resident of Trumbull for over 50 years.

She is survived by her six sons and three daughters and their spouses, 24 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren: Richard and Jane Greenwood of Black Rock and their son Mathew; William and Jacqueline Greenwood of Fairfield and their children William, Joseph, Thomas and Sarah; Mary Jane Greenwood of Keene, NH and her children William and his wife Rebecca, Matthew and his wife Hayleyanne (and their sons Finnegan and Bodhi), James and his wife Stefanie (and their son Theodore) and Marie and her fiancée Peter; Raymond and Catherine Greenwood of Cary, NC and their children Jennifer, Daniel and Michael; Ellen and Charles Harry of Stratford and their children John and his fiancée Lauren, Kathryn and Jacob; Edward Greenwood of Trumbull and his son Fally; Joseph and Elizabeth Greenwood of Keene, NH and their children Ellen, Timothy and Robert; Susan and David Adams of Denver, CO and their children Benjamin, Charlotte and Henry; and Jack and Samera Greenwood of Fairfield and their children Jack and Abigail.

She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, James and Jane Birge; sister, Nancy Goodrich and brothers-in-law, John Stadtmueller and Charles Felix, all of Stratford.  She had been predeceased by her son Paul Greenwood and grandson Francis Apgar, her brothers, Robert Birge and Rev. Monsignor George Birge and, sisters, Marie Minahan and Ellen Stadtmueller.

Jane was a graduate of Lauralton Hall in Milford and the College of Our Lady of Good Counsel in White Plains, NY. She began her teaching career at Nichols Elementary School in Trumbull, and later in life returned to teaching at St. Mark’s School in Stratford.  She was known throughout her life for her strong faith, kind spirit, compassion and convictions. She welcomed all in her home and at her table. She enjoyed time with family, friends and neighbors, including those enduring friendships through Mother’s Circle.  She loved dancing and took great joy in teaching her grandchildren and great grandchildren dance steps.  Her family will always cherish her smile and spontaneity, her love of cats and dogs, swimming at ‘Greenwood Summer Camp’, and skiing and skating with her throughout New England.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 12th, 2019, at 10:00 AM at St. Theresa Church, 5301 Main St., Trumbull.  Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 1056 Daniels Farm Road, Trumbull. Friends and family are invited to call on Friday January 11th, 4:00 to 8:00 PM at the Redgate - Hennessy Funeral Home, 4 Gorham Place (corner Main Street), Trumbull.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to Foundations in Education https://www.foundationsineducation.org/.
