Joseph Michael Tantalo Jr., 102, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2021 at Griffin Hospital with his daughter Candace by his side. He was born in Bridgeport, CT to Jennie Casillo and Joseph Tantalo Sr. on November 13, 1918. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marguerite, his daughter Joan, sons James and Joseph, siblings Rose, Victor and Jane, and his granddaughter Nicole. He is survived by his two daughters, Patricia Gallagher and Candace Whetstine, as well as eleven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and many loving nieces and nephews. Joseph’s life spanned over a century as he built a legacy of service to others. He embodied an authentic kindness that affected all who knew him. An audiophile, he reveled in sharing his lifelong passion for music with others. For many years he enriched the lives of countless residents at the Dinan Center by bringing joy through vibrant musical programs. He was employed by Prudential Life Insurance Company until his retirement and earned numerous awards for his sales achievements. A natural performer, he was the Shelton Songster’s only centenarian and will be remembered for his moving solo of Ave Maria. He was an avid reader and enjoyed many an afternoon at the Huntington Library where the staff awarded him a plaque of appreciation for his patronage on his 100th birthday. Joe remained active in serving his community throughout his life, and in 2019 was recognized for his voluntarism at the Shelton Senior Center. Joe was a quintessential gentleman and was loved by all for his warmth, sincerity, and unwavering spirit. The patriarch of his family, he will be dearly missed by those who knew him as “Big Dad.” Joe’s family is indebted to the comprehensive, personalized care given by Dr. Shaun Najarian, and the kindness and compassion displayed by the clinical staff at Griffin Hospital. Arrangements will be private with a memorial service and celebration of his life to be announced when public health guidelines permit.
