Tribute

Lois Browne Lawrence, born on October 29, 1929 passed away peacefully, on March 22, after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. She is predeceased by John Lawrence, M.D., her loving husband of 56 years, a twin brother Lloyd, and her sister Mrs. Shirley Dixon. She is survived by three devoted daughters: Julie Lawrence, Carolyn Dion (Mike), Maryleigh Antoun (Jon), a grandson Jonathan Lawrence Antoun; and a niece Robin Crawford. Lois, born and raised in the segregated south, graduated from Miner Teachers’ College in Washington, D.C., the first college dedicated to the education of African American women and men for careers in teaching. She later received a Master of Arts (1975) from Fairfield University, and was a guidance counselor for Brien McMahon High School, until her retirement. In 1986, she received a Master of Science in Social Work from Columbia University, New York, NY, from which she built a private therapy practice and utilized her skills to affect change in family therapy and adoption practices. Lois was an active and contributing member in the League of Women Voters; the St. Vincent’s Medical Center Auxiliary; the sorority of Delta Sigma Theta; and integral in the Rolling Ridge Triangle beautification project. She was a champion of education and self-development, always willing to learn something new or impart her knowledge to others. She and John spent many summers on Martha's Vineyard, playing golf and enjoying her friends and family. A memorial gathering will be held Saturday, April 7, 2018 from 12:00 p.m. (noon) to 1:00 p.m., in the Redgate – Hennessy Funeral Home, Main Street and Gorham Place, Trumbull.
