Dr. Robert Biggins passed away on Wednesday July 2 at the Connecticut Hospice in Branford. He was the son of the late Hugh and Agnes McCulloch Biggins. He was 90 years old. He was born in Ville St. Pierre, Montreal, Canada and grew up in Scotland. He became a dentist there in 1947, served in the Royal Army Dental Corps of the British Army, achieving a rank of Captain, and married his wife of 66 years, Mary McCarthy Flanigan. In 1951 the family immigrated to the United States and lived in Bridgeport for 5 years before moving to Easton where he lived for 57 years. To practice dentistry in the United States, Dr. Biggins attended the third and fourth year of dental study at Tufts University and received his D.M.D. in 1964. Prior to returning to dental school he worked several jobs including a journeyman compositor position at the Bridgeport Telegram (now Connecticut Post). Dr. Biggins practiced dentistry in Monroe for thirty-four years until he retired in August of 1998 at the age of 75. He was very active in the Connecticut Dental Association and with the Bridgeport Dental Association where he maintained several key positions as chairman and member of the Board of Governors, member of the Children’s Dental Health Committee and their Patient Relations Committee. In 1979, Dr. Biggins served on the Connecticut State Dental Association Ad Hoc Committee on Alcohol and Drugs. He has volunteered many years of service to these rehabilitation programs acting as a member and treasurer to the Greater Bridgeport Council on Alcoholism. In 1995 he received the Daniel F. Lynch Award from the Dental Society of Greater Waterbury. After he retired Bob Biggins turned his focus to researching the genealogy of his family and wrote a family history. Bob Biggins was a friend of Bill W. and helped many people along the way. Last year Dr. Biggins and his wife Mary were awarded the Saint Augustine Medal of Service for generous service to the Church in the Diocese of Bridgeport. He was deeply devoted to his faith and a daily communicant at Notre Dame of Easton Church. He is survived by his wife Mary, son Robert Biggins and wife Janet, daughters Beth Quinlan and husband Paul, Zita Kachadourian and husband Arthur, Mary Kate McGoldrick and husband Bill, brother John Biggins, sister Zita Dornan, nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
